Maartens’ research focuses on the potential impact of Global Transnational Grids (GTG’s, connected power systems on different continents with long distance subsea power cables) on decarbonisation of the power system and consequential techno-economic effects. The main approach in his study is developing, testing and simulating a global power model based on a range of future scenarios to assess the added value of aforementioned GTG’s. Power system modelling within this study occurs by utilizing PLEXOS Integrated Energy Model.
Maarten holds a BSc from Saxion University of Applied Sciences and a MSc in Energy and Environmental sciences from the University of Groningen (the Netherlands). During internships at an engineering consultancy firm (Royal HaskoningDHV) and a local governmental agency (municipality of Wierden, the Netherlands) Maarten gained practical experience in the fields of energy and environment. Later on Maarten went to KTH Royal institute of technology in Stockholm for a research visit where he extended his knowledge and experience in energy modelling by working on a policy report for the European Commission.
