Michael Ahern
PhD Student
Postgraduate Student
UCC Energy Transition Energy Management
University College Cork

Overview

Michael is a PhD student interested in the application of advanced techniques to solve real world issues in the industrial setting. He believes that merging the areas of data analytics and engineering will result in better insight into industrial activities, allowing for smarter decisions to be made to increase energy efficiency.

Current Activities

Currently, he is researching the area of fault detection and diagnostics (FDD), industry 4.0, and predictive analytics. Using real industrial data, he is developing a methodology to implement advanced analytics on industrial equipment to increase their energy efficiency and overall health status.

Background

Michael has a B.Eng Mechanical Engineering from Cork Institute of Technology. During his work placement, he was introduced to the concept of Industry 4.0 and the associated benefits of the increased communication between machines and workers. The gaps between the theory and the real world led him to the pursuit of a PhD in which the industrial vision is aligned.
