OVERVIEW 

Tom is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Engineering in the Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering at The University of Limerick. He holds a B.Eng. in Computer Engineering, a Masters in Engineering in Security Protocol Design and a PhD in Formal Logics for Security Protocol Verification. He is a funded investigator in MaREI, the Centre for Marine and Renewable Energy Ireland, Confirm, the Smart Manufacturing Centre, and Lero – the Irish software Research Centre. His research interest includes data and cyber security for Wireless Sensor Networks, the Internet of Things and Smart Collaborative Robotics.

CURRENT ACTIVITIES

Research includes; secure WSN/IoT for observation and monitoring in marine systems, Autonomous systems and Manufacturing environments, IT-OT Security, Secure Marine Communications, Cryptography/Encryption, Data Security, Network Security and Formal Verification Methods.

BACKGROUND

Born in Westmeath, Ireland. He received his Honours Degree in Computer Engineering in 1991. Following this, he worked as a software engineer with the Microelectronics Applications Centre (MAC), Ireland. He was awarded his PhD in 2003 from the University of Limerick for work on Formal Verification Logics for use in security protocol design. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Limerick and group leader of the IoT Security group in the Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (www.cris.ul.ie). He has graduated 15 PhD students in the general area of Security for data, networks and the IoT and currently, he has 6 registered students working in the areas of secure communications for marine systems, manufacturing and medical environments.
