UCC Energy Transition Energy Policy & Modelling

OVERVIEW

Ellen Maye is a PhD Researcher at University College Cork (UCC) working on an SFI-funded project under the supervision of Dr. Barry Hayes, contributing to research on the long-term planning and evolution of decentralised electricity networks. Her work applies artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques to the optimisation of the electricity grid’s management.

CURRENT ACTIVITIES

At present, Ellen is researching methods to enhance energy management systems, combining ML techniques with network modelling to promote flexibility and sustainability in grid operation.

BACKGROUND

Before pursuing a PhD, Ellen graduated from UCC in 2025 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronic engineering. During her undergraduate studies, she developed a strong interest in sustainable energy systems and the role of digitalisation in supporting the electrification of the energy sector. In her final year, she undertook a project proposed by Dr. Barry Hayes that focused on applying AI to detect the presence of low carbon technologies (LCTs) from electricity smart meter data. Following on from her undergraduate degree, she continues to explore how data-driven methods can support sustainable grid operation.
