Breaking the Surface 2016 Workshop
MaREI researchers and PhD students participated in the 8th Breaking the Surface 2016 Workshop.
MaREI researchers and PhD students from MMRRC at the University of Limerick participated in Breaking the Surface 2016 Workshop held in Biograd na Moru, Croatia, from 2nd – 9th of October 2016. Breaking the Surface is a meeting place of experts and students of marine control engineering and signal processing, and the marine robotics application areas in various types of ocean science. The multidisciplinary approach serves to gather the experts from marine robotics and all of the various users of the underwater robotics technologies, such as: marine biology, maritime security, nautical archaeology, oceanology and many more.
We have contributed to the diversity of topics by inviting the three Irish speakers: Francis Flannery, Cormac Gebruers and Mark Jessopp. Mark talked about the ‘Co-existence of top marine predators and humans….and the role of technology’, Cormac discussed and challenged the attendees with his talk on ‘Marine Robotics Applications in Humanitarian, Search & Rescue and Civilian Focussed Security Operations – what might the future hold?’ and Francis gave an overview of ‘Bootstrapping SonarSim: A Start-up Journey’ during the Innovation Tuesday Section. Ours Dan Toal and Edin Omerdic gave, respectively, a talk on ‘Robotics for challenging ocean intervention in marine renewable energy and other applications’, and a hands-on demonstration on ‘Thruster control using LabVIEW real-rime & FPGA graphical programming’.
