“Listen to Cork’s maritime heritage”
Listen to Cork’s maritime heritage: a collective walk | Date and time: Saturday, May 24th 11.00 – 13.30 (2.5 hours)
This event has limited capacity and is open to registered participants only.
Meet at Fitzgerald’s Park east entrance (near the red and white gatehouse (currently Sample Studio’s exhibition space)) at 11am.
Organised to coincide with European Maritime Day 2025, taking place in Cork in May. Discover Cork’s blue spaces and maritime history on an interactive walking tour, including opportunities for aquatic citizen science. Participants will be led by a local maritime history expert to key sites around the city centre and will discuss the role of the maritime landscape in shaping Cork’s environment, economy and identity through the ages. At the same time and aided by a marine scientist, participants will discover and record sounds of the river, the ocean, the port and related human activities which make Cork a vibrant water-based city and learn how such recordings can be used as valuable scientific data. A videographer will be employed to capture the event and make an artistic product as another resource.
We will begin in Fitzgerald’s Park and end 2.5 hours later at the quayside by the old Port of Cork, where a number of events and attractions will be open to the public as part of the wider European Maritime Days.
This event has been co-organised by MaREI University College Cork, PREP4BLUE, TIDAL ArtS, and ACTeon Environment, with co-funding from the European Union. Listen to Cork’s Maritime Heritage is part of a programme of activities called “Listen to the Ocean” which are all connected by an ocean sounds theme. Look out for our other events throughout the week!
Note: This is an outdoor event. We will walk approximately 2km during the event. Please dress appropriately and plan for a chance of rain.
In case of particularly inclement weather, the event may be cancelled. Please keep an eye on your email on the days before, where you will be informed of any cancellation.
