COP27 at UCC’s Open Day

October 8, 2022 2:00 pm

UCC’s Mock COP will be a role-play version of global climate negotiations.

This event is for prospective students visiting UCC on their annual Undergraduate Open Day. All are very welcome to join, regardless of your prior knowledge of climate change or negotiating. You can participate as a country negotiator in the annual global climate change negotiations, and endeavour to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees!

Register here.

Deadline: Please register before Thursday the 6th of October for this event!

The Mock COP simulates the experience of the Conference of Parties (COP) climate change negotiations. The COP negotiations occur between members of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), who have agreed to stabilise greenhouse gas concentrations in order to prevent further climate breakdown. At COP26 in Glasgow, UCC was the only Irish University to be granted Observer Status.

This November, 196 countries of the world will meet in Egypt at COP27 to negotiate the next stage of an agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. To mark the importance of the COP27 in the global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, on October 8th, UCC will host a role-playing version (Mock COP) of the negotiations to understand the challenges and to see if a global agreement can be reached.

Participants will adopt negotiating positions for different country groupings and have the opportunity to experience the dynamics of negotiating an international agreement on climate change. We hope to make it an educational but also enjoyable and thought-provoking event.

Check out the video of UCC’s Mock26 event which took place in preparation for COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021. UCC was the only university in Ireland to be granted Observer Status at COP26.
