Public Engagement at European Maritime Day

In May 2025, as part of the PREP4BLUE and TIDAL ArtS projects, the MaREI UCC team were at European Maritime Day in Cork. The aim was to pilot a concept for binding these kinds of high level marine stakeholder events more closely to the people and cultures of the places they visit. We wanted to organise a selection of events that would take place outside of the official venue in locations frequented by Cork people themselves. This would create a link between European Maritime Day and the long maritime culture of the city. It would also give visitors and locals alike an opportunity to meet each other, learn from each other, and have fun! The research going alongside this will assess these events from a social inclusion perspective, developing approaches to increase the diversity and accessibility of marine policy events and marine resource management across Europe.
