New paper on societal impact through a new approach to regional development

MaREI’s Evan Boyle from Univerity College Cork published a new paper ‘Scaling Deep: Societal impact through a new approach to regional development’ with the Dingle Hub. It outlines Dingle Hub’s approach to regional development, with Deirdre de Bhailís & Muireann Kelliher.

Dingle Hub operates in a facilitating role between different actors, organisations and community representatives, leading work locally and linking such work to external partners within the realm of sustainability transitions.

A key initial project of Dingle Hub, Dingle Peninsula 2030 was a multi-partner climate action initiative on Peninsula, Co. Kerry, involving the Hub, ESB Networks (electricity distribution system operator), North East West Kerry Development- NEWKD (local community development organisation) and MaREI, the SFI Research Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine coordinated by University College Cork. This initiative has come to an end, but the projects and work started here continue through the ongoing work of Dingle Hub.

The role of MaREI in the initial stages was crucial – supporting capacity and capability building within Dingle Hub – through collaboration with researchers and unlocking access to resources and project funding. This partnership between MaREI and Dingle Hub continues through ongoing projects in anaerobic digestion and energy citizenship at a national and European level. The collaborative approach to working with research has enabled to hub to lead on delivering real local action, that is documented and analysed whilst feeding into policy to have meaningful impact.

Within this paper, they have outlined the scaling deep approach developed by Dingle Hub, as lead partner on the Dingle Peninsula 2030 project, and further implemented through their ongoing work.
